GIGO
GIGO Beacons for Fishing Gear Monitoring (Gear In, Gear Out)
GIGO (Gear In, Gear Out) beacons are an accessory designed exclusively for use with the SC2 fisheries monitoring platform. They are not a standalone product and rely on SC2 to capture, process, and report fishing activity data. Working seamlessly within the SC2 ecosystem, GIGO beacons provide an efficient and ergonomically designed solution for the autonomous monitoring of commercial fishing activities. Together, SC2 and GIGO deliver enhanced fisheries management, regulatory compliance, operational visibility, and accurate fishing effort reporting across fleets of all sizes.
Engineers design GIGO beacons for harsh marine environments. Therefore, they operate at depths of up to 2000 metres, making them suitable for both coastal and deep-sea fishing operations. Furthermore, the beacons utilise ultra-low power Bluetooth technology to maximise efficiency and support a battery life of up to three years, creating a true fit-and-forget solution that reduces maintenance requirements and operational downtime.
When operators attach GIGO beacons to fishing gear, the devices automatically detect and record each deployment (gear in) and retrieval (gear out). In addition, every event includes an automatic timestamp record, providing accurate and reliable activity data. SC2 combines this information with vessel position and time data to create a comprehensive picture of fishing activity, even when multiple gear types are deployed.
As a result, operators gain valuable insight into gear usage, fishing patterns, and operational efficiency. Furthermore, the system improves traceability, supports regulatory compliance, and enables data-driven decision-making that promotes sustainable fisheries management. Compatible with all fishing gear types, GIGO beacons extend the capabilities of the SC2 platform while providing a robust and reliable monitoring solution for commercial fishing vessels worldwide.
Deep Sea Performance and Long Battery Life
Engineers design GIGO beacons for harsh marine environments. Therefore, they operate at depths of up to 2000 meters, making them suitable for both coastal and deep sea fishing.
Furthermore, the beacons deliver a battery life of up to three years, creating a true fit-and-forget solution. This, in turn, reduces maintenance requirements and minimises operational downtime.
Accurate Gear Tracking and Activity Monitoring
When operators attach GIGO beacons to fishing gear, the devices automatically detect and record each deployment (gear in) and retrieval (gear out). As a result, crews no longer need manual input, and data accuracy improves.
In addition, the system integrates with the SC2 Vessel Monitoring System (VMS). This integration enables precise calculation of gear dwell time, which measures how long gear remains in the water.
Consequently, operators gain a clearer understanding of fishing patterns, effort, and efficiency.
Smart Data Integration for Better Insights
GIGO beacons combine with real-time GPS position and timestamp data from VMS. As a result, they provide a clear and accurate picture of fishing activity.
For example, this insight helps vessels that use multiple gear types, where tracking operations becomes more complex.
Supporting Compliance and Sustainable Fisheries
GIGO beacons improve traceability, compliance, and reporting. Furthermore, they support regulatory requirements and sustainability initiatives.
Ultimately, they deliver consistent, high-quality data that enables data-driven decision-making. This helps operators improve efficiency while protecting marine resources.
