GIGO Fishing Gear Monitoring Beacon

The Succorfish GIGO is a fishing gear beacon that automatically tracks fishing gear entering the water and leaving the water (Gear In, Gear Out). Our GIGO fishing gear beacons allow for autonomous monitoring of commercial fishing activities when used with our SC2 vessel monitoring platform. The GIGO’s compact and highly robust design means the GIGO can be easily attached to pots, lines, nets or any other fishing gear to log precise timestamps without any input from the crew, at depths of up to 2,000 meters. Together, SC2 and GIGO enable remote electronic monitoring of fishing activity for regulatory compliance, operational visibility, and accurate fishing effort reporting across fleets of all sizes.

GIGO is designed exclusively as an accessory for the SC2 vessel monitoring system. Where SC2 tracks vessel position and activity at the surface, GIGO extends that visibility below the waterline. Together they capture the precise timestamp and GPS position that fishing gear enters and leaves the water, feeding that data directly into the SC2 platform.

A Fit-and-Forget Gear Monitoring Beacon Built for Commercial Fishing

  • Fit-and-forget Solution — the beacons deliver a battery life of up to three years, creating a true fit-and-forget solution. This, in turn, reduces maintenance requirements and minimises operational downtime.
  • Deep Sea Rated — GIGO beacons are designed for the harshest marine environments, operating at depths of up to 2,000 meters, making them suitable for both coastal and deep-sea fishing.
  • Automatic Activity Recording — when operators attach GIGO beacons to fishing gear, the devices automatically detect and record each deployment (gear in) and retrieval (gear out). As a result, no manual crew input is required and data accuracy improves.
  • SC2 Integration — automatic SC2 integration combines highly reliable hybrid cellular-satellite location tracking with GIGO events to log the precise location of your deployed fishing gear.
  • Universal Gear Compatibility — designed to work with all fishing gear types, GIGO can be deployed across your whole fleet regardless of the fishery or method.

Succorfish products that integrate with GIGO

SC2 Global Connectivity

The SC2 Gen3 is a hybrid Iridium satellite and Cat 1 BIS cellular platform that delivers seamless two-way data transmission and real-time vessel tracking anywhere.

Delphis Acoustic Modem

The Delphis underwater acoustic modem enables real-time subsea communication and data transfer in the most demanding offshore environments.

Depth & Temperature

A future-proofed D&T platform that supports expansion through future sensor integrations, including conductivity/salinity, dissolved oxygen, turbidity and more.

SC2 Data Platform

Our purpose built SC2 data platform provides a centralised dashboard for vessel activity, gear events, sensor data and compliance reporting. Custom software development is available to build any required integrations.

What data does GIGO track?

When operators attach GIGO beacons to fishing gear, the devices automatically detect and record each deployment (gear in) and retrieval (gear out). In addition, every event includes an automatic timestamp record, providing accurate and reliable activity data. The SC2 vessel monitoring platform combines this information with precise vessel position and time data to create a comprehensive picture of fishing activity, even when multiple gear types are deployed.

GIGO as Part of Your SC2 Fisheries Monitoring Platform

GIGO is designed exclusively as an accessory for the SC2 vessel monitoring system. Where SC2 tracks vessel position and activity at the surface, GIGO extends that visibility below the waterline. Together they capture the precise timestamp and GPS position that fishing gear enters and leaves the water, feeding that data directly into the SC2 platform.

Supporting Compliance and Sustainable Fisheries Management

Commercial fishing in UK and EU waters is subject to increasingly rigorous monitoring requirements. Remote Electronic Monitoring (REM) is set to become mandatory for vessels fishing in English waters, with EU gear-marking rules already in force for vessels operating in EU waters from January 2026.

GIGO supports that compliance obligation by creating an automatic, timestamped record of every gear deployment and retrieval event. Combined with SC2 position data, this produces the verified audit trail of fishing effort that regulators, certification bodies, and sustainable seafood schemes require — without adding administrative burden to the crew.

GIGO Fishing Gear Beacon Case Studies

Lobster Fishermen in Canada on Boat with Lobster Pots and tracking device

Lobster Fisheries in Canada

Lobster fishermen operating around Miscou Island, New Brunswick, and the neighbouring Nova Scotia fishing grounds face a recurring operational challenge: locating deployed pot strings in adverse conditions. Elevated sea states, strong currents, and poor visibility routinely increase search times, drive up fuel costs, and put valuable gear at risk of permanent loss. Succorfish deployed GIGO — a dedicated gear tracking and monitoring solution — integrated with the SC2 Vessel Monitoring System and the wider Succorfish Remote Electronic Monitoring (REM) platform.

Industry-Led Innovation Supporting Commercial Abalone Fisheries

Australia’s commercial abalone fishery is one of the country’s most valuable and tightly regulated marine industries. Operating along the south-west coast, commercial divers work in demanding conditions where safety, accurate effort recording, and regulatory compliance are all critical. Succorfish deployed GIGO beacon technology integrated with the SC2 Vessel Monitoring System and the wider Remote Electronic Monitoring (REM) platform to address these challenges head-on.

How The GIGO Fishing Gear Beacon Works

  1. Attach – GIGO beacons are attached to fishing gear before deployment — compatible with pots, lines, nets, and trawls across all commercial fishery types.
  2. Deploy – As gear enters the water, GIGO automatically detects the deployment event and records a precise timestamp. No crew input is required.
  3. Monitor – While submerged, GIGO continues to log activity data for the full duration of the soak, operating at depths of up to 2,000 metres on on a battery lasting up to three years.
  4. Retrieve – When gear is hauled, GIGO automatically records the retrieval timestamp, completing the gear-in, gear-out activity record.
  5. Auto Sync – On returning to the vessel, GIGO syncs wirelessly via Bluetooth to the SC2 platform, combining activity timestamps with GPS position data to calculate soak time and geo-locate every haul event.
