The role of the Combat Diver is both a unique and dangerous one. From reconnaissance to clearing mines to tactical deployment against enemy-held targets, the challenges of completing covert SCUBA missions and drills can be significant.
If the unpredictability of underwater environments and combat scenarios doesn’t provide enough variables, divers must also contend with a full inventory of equipment – adding both weight and complexity to proceedings. These typically include the likes of rebreathers, weapons, jet boots and communications devices.
A communication device in this type of scenario represents a lifeline back to safety and recovery, so its reliability and durability is essential during any form of deployment. At the same time, a diver can’t afford to carry a large and unwieldy piece of equipment, and so any device taken into the field must be as compact and lightweight as possible. After all, it is crucial for a diver to be able to stay in contact with their tactical Maritime Forward Operating Base (MFOB).
Of course, maintaining lines of communication in aquatic environments is notoriously difficult, given the corrosive effect of salt water and the strain caused by diving to significant depths. And while there are a range of devices that purport to meet IP68 standards, the reality of rugged operations and long immersion in water mean that not all devices with this rating can truly be deemed fit for purpose.
During operations a Personal Locating Beacon (PLB) can be the lifeline back to recovery. While the proven 112G has proven it’s self for landside operations, this system is not IP68 and certainly not suitable for the Combat Diver.
Finding a solution to this gap in the market is something we’ve dedicated significant time and resources to at Succorfish. Given our expertise in developing tracking devices for the most inhospitable of environments, we knew that we could do better.
The Succorfish XTREMIS
In developing the Succorfish XTREMIS our brief was clear: to produce a truly robust communications device that can be taken into any environment, providing secure and reliable tracking when it matters most.
The XTREMIS is a dive-ready handheld, two-way satellite messaging and tracking device. This system provides a global communication of GPS location and tracking, which can be monitored in real-time from Tactical Head Quarters (TGHQ). The XTREMIS also features an emergency Cospas-Sarsat beacon able to inform all emergency services.
